NOTES ON THE HOUSE OF DETENTION, 1852-1890
…the House of Detention in Kingston upon Thames, 1852-1890…
This is a PowerPoint presentation with notes of a talk that was given at a public meeting of the Kingston upon Thames Society on 21 October 2026. It focused on research into the origins of a building called “The Apple Store” that has been declared by Kingston Council, its owner, to be a “non-designated heritage asset”. The research explored two of Tolworth’s landed estates, Worcester Park House and Tolworth Hall [formerly Riverhill House]. The Apple Store is located within Riverhill Mobile Home Park [KT4 7QB] on the site of Tolworth Hall. Together with the Coach House, also on the site, the buildings are all that is left of Tolworth’s landed estates. This is an aspect of Tolworth’s History that previously has received little attention.
